FileMaker 11 Tutorial Video

This Beginners FileMaker 11 Tutorial Video is designed to help new users gain a comfortable working familiarity with the software. As it is the first tutorial video in a multi-course series, it is not meant to cover every aspect of FileMaker, but it does address an impressive range of tasks and techniques, all aimed at the novice user.
With onscreen narration provided by longtime FileMaker script developer and power user John Mark Osbourne, the training videos offer useful tips based upon real world experience. At the center of this tutorial video is the development of a functioning Contacts solution, pulling together multiple skills that will serve users in any aspect of FileMaker usage. Written so that even someone who has never used FileMaker can follow along, complex techniques are split into simple steps, and everything is explained one point at a time. However, even experienced users can benefit from the training as it sets up the early stages of the invoicing project at the center of the later tutorial instalments.
Topics covered include Creating a Database, Finding and Sorting, Modifying Layouts, Scripting, Reports, and more. The tutorial comes on CD / DVD or as streaming video for subscribers of the unlimited online service, all options allow you to learn FileMaker at your own speed.

FileMaker 11: Charting a New Course

Because it allowed easy, automated access to a variety of data types, FileMaker has always been seen as a natural companion to user-created charts and graphs. While in the past this was achievable primarily through third party extensions and scripts or simply exporting the information into Microsoft Excel and other software solutions, FileMaker 11 now has the built-in capability to create instant visual representations of user data sets.
Accessible through a native, wizard-based interface that walks you through a number of options, the charts offer a variety of style choices and color considerations that will help you customize the appearance of your presentations for almost any effect you desire. With support for Bar, Line, Area, and Pie charts, the program brings a significant amount of value added without a major increase in difficulty for the end user. Once your business data has been incorporated into Filemaker and compatible filetypes, you can track sales performance numbers, progress reports, market analyses and more through the dynamic chart functionality and easily share your information with others.
The instant Web Publishing option built into FileMaker Pro 11 is the perfect complement to the chart and graph functionality. By giving you a simple and effective way to put up-to-date information into the hands of those who need it, the new features in FileMaker transform the application from a multi-purpose organization application into a true business intelligence tool.
When these improvements are considered in combination with new options for creating spreadsheet-like summaries and reports, the impressive range of what is possible for the power user extends even further. While the new features are relatively easy to use, FileMaker is still a large, versatile platform and having the right introduction will certainly help.

JavaScript Libraries Tutorial Video – Training Series

This JavaScript Libraries Tutorial Video course is meant to help beginners learn what JS Libraries are and how they work and then offer hands-on training that will leave users with a solid working knowledge of six of the most popular libraries being used by web developers today.

Narrated and written by expert developer James Street, these video lessons are presented in a unique visual format that is heavy on examples, providing a course of study that gets quite in-depth but never difficult to understand. Because JavaScript Libraries give developers and designers control over the graphical content of web-based elements and applications, it’s extremely helpful that you can see real-time visual results onscreen as the tutorials progress.

Learning from a book in this case would be a nightmare, and while it’s easy to find individual tips and tricks online for free, it’s simply not possible to find a guide that matches the range of this tutorial video course in one place. Available online through the Apex subscription service or as one convenient training solution on CD / DVD, the instructional videos are Mac and Windows compatible.

JS Library: Script.aculo.us

A JavaScript Library is a collection of JavaScript code commonly used to create functions, shortcuts, animation effects and interface elements within today’s web applications and dynamic web pages. The idea is that by offering developers a predefined set of tools, they can more easily create robust functionality and visual effects while maintaining standards compliant code. Script.aculo.us is a particularly powerful JavaScript Library. Developed as an add-on to the popuplar Prototype JS framework, Script.aculo.us is used by companies like Apple Computer, NASA, CNN, Gucci and Feedburner to develop the highest level of interaction and style in web content.

Script.aculo.us enhances the Prototype library by adding user interface controls, utilities and visual effects. The impressive part about the additions are the efficiency with which they have been implemented. Take the visual effects engine. Script.aculo.us comes with just five core visual effects: Opacity, MoveBy, Highlight, Scale, and Parallel. There are then over 16 more out-of-the-box effects that can be implemented by combining these core visual effects with one another, giving you a wide range of capabilities from one basic toolset. And since programmers are free to create add-ons and new effects of their own, the possibilities are endless.
In a way, this modular philosophy is what JS Libraries are all about: extending the functionality and interactivity of web content without the client or server-site glut of code that was more common in the early days of web applications. Javascript Libraries have become a de facto part of Web 2.0 by offering AJAX controls and all-around versatility.

These JavaScript Library tutorial video lessons not only show users how to use Prototype and Scriptaculous but also give a detailed treatment of the popular Dojo, YUI and jQuery frameworks. Users will get a good working knowledge of the libraries and, more importantly, learn which libraries are best suited for different needs. See the free video demos to get a feel of the training for yourself.

Apple Logic Studio: More For Less

When Apple announced it wouldn’t be releasing just an update to Logic Pro 7 but a new suite of tools under the name Logic Studio, it wasn’t a total surprise.  The same product model had already been used by the company to great success with its Final Cut video editing software.  The real shocker was that Apple was offering the entire Logic Studio for half of Logic Pro 7’s original retail price.  At 500 dollars, Logic Studio is positioned at a price point that is appealing to not only audio professionals but also for the serious, quality-minded amateurs, aspiring DJs and garage bands of all stripes.

In addition to the latest (and noticeably slicker) version of its award-winning sequencer and editing software, the new suite of tools includes Studio Instruments and Effects, the Studio Sound Library, the Impulse Response Utility for reverb and effects, Apple Loops Utility, Soundtrack Pro 2 for creating full audio compositions and scores, Compressor 3 for video and audio data compression, WaveBurner Pro for CD mastering, and MainStage, a new application that makes your studio-quality effects work ready for live performances.

By offering such a deep and diverse range of products under one umbrella and at one competitive price point, the team at Apple is doing their best to make Logic Studio (and by extension the Mac) the go-to solution for anyone even remotely serious about working with audio.  And they’ve succeeded.  There is simply no other software solution, feature for feature, that can compare to Logic Studio at the program’s price point.  Much like Final Cut Studio has become a dominant player in the video editing world, Logic Pro 8 and its bundled software offer a robust, user-friendly and affordable solution suitable for seasoned professionals as well as dedicated beginners just looking to get started.  And unlike in the video world, there is no established player like Avid vying for competition.

Apple Logic Studio Apps Tutorial

You can certainly get a lot of excellent work done using Apple Logic Pro 8 or Soundtrack Pro 2 by themselves.  But with so many powerful supplementary applications at your disposal, it would be a shame not to take advantage of them.  This engaging example-based Apple Logic training video series breaks down MainStage, WaveBurner, Compressor, the Apple Loops Utility and the Impulse Response Utility and shows you how you can implement their advanced and most useful features into your production and performance workflows.

Designed and narrated by audio expert and recording industry veteran Sam McGuire, this visually-based training course will give you a familiarity with the range of auxiliary tools that will help you work more efficiently and productively.  Whether you want to create your own audio CDs to professional standards or if you’re looking for batch processing solutions for compressing your recordings into web-friendly file sizes, this tutorial series has something for you.

Available online or as one training package on CD, these videos allow you to learn at your own pace.  And since the course disks are Mac and Windows compatible, you can learn from the comfort of your own desk or from anywhere there’s a computer.
