AutoCAD: A Strong History and Stronger Future

With over 25 years in production, AutoCAD is the go-to software tool for many thousands of architects and designers worldwide. Its introduction shifted the way design work was distributed and done by allowing individual workers to accomplish more while at the same time opening opportunities for more effective methods of collaboration. It also brought down costs by allowing CAD to move from expensive proprietary machines to standard personal computers. The impact of this near-unversal program continues to evolve to this day.
With the assistance of AutoCAD, architects and structural engineers are accomplishing more than ever. And the projects being developed are more than just traditionally blocked-out businesses and homes. AutoCAD as a platform has continued to grow with various industries fueling development and change. While the program can easily handle more basic work, it is also being actively used to create cutting edge designs for different types of stadiums, shopping complexes, integrated structures and whole neighborhoods designed for mixed use. Buildings with bold edges and layouts previously associated with 3D modeling tools can be planned and prepared with AutoCAD 2011, as Autodesk software developers continue to update the core functionality to meet the needs of professional users.

AutoCAD 2011 Tutorial Video – Training CD / DVD

In this Architects AutoCAD Tutorial Video series, you will learn how to use the software by seeing it in use. There’s no homework, no tests. AutoCAD 2010 Advanced Concepts Tutorial Video

Here’s an Advanced AutoCAD 2010 Tutorial Video that will catch your attention.  The third title in an already impressive AutoCAD Training Series, it covers the highest level of software functionality, with an emphasis on customization and collaboration.
Today’s developers and designers inevitably work as part of a team. Whether you want to run DWG files by clients or share your work with colleagues, it’s important to have easy options for getting your projects onto others’ computers, and in a format that preserves your original vision. In this tutorial, certified CAD expert Shaun Bryant (AAI) breaks down some of the new features in AutoCAD that not only let you share outputted projects but also trade configuration and scripting files so that every member of your team can be on the same page.
This intensive course devotes significant time to self documentation features within the program, addressing tables, advanced annotation and scaling functionality so that you can produce information-rich documents that more effectively communicate your vision.
The training format is effective but simple. Using a real time video feed of the application in use, techniques are demonstrated directly within the AutoCAD interface, with narration providing reinforcement. To make things even easier, DWG files are included that let you follow along with examples onscreen. The tutorial video can be accessed online through a subscriber service or bought on CD / DVD, and it’s viewable on both Mac and Windows machines so you don’t have to be at your workstation to watch the lessons.

Better Drafting and Design Functionality

AutoCAD 2010 is a major improvement over its predecessors because it offers new features where they count the most. Core design tools have been improved to reflect the way most professionals do their work, without radically changing the essential controls.
Parametric Drawing – This is a simple but major enhancement to the AutoCAD platform. Users can now use geometric constraints to ‘lock’ lines to stay perpendicular or parallel to one another so that small changes do not ruin the feasibility of their designs. In addition, objects can be constrained to be collinear, coincident, vertical, horizontal and concentric as well. Dimensional constraints allow you to control object sizes in relation to one another so that a change in one aspect of your project will automatically adjust all other elements tied to it. In the course of a complex project, the constraints can save literally hours of time.
3D Modeling – While 3D got a big boost with AutoCAD 2007, there was still a lot to be improved. Now modeling smooth surfaces and organic-styled features is possible because of the mesh editing tools included in 2010. Drawing from standard 3D software like Maya, AutoCAD has an array of new options for doing impressive 3D work.
The Advanced AutoCAD 2010 Tutorial Video covers 3D topics in addition to other higher end tasks and techniques. A full list of topics can be found on the product page, with free demos that let you get started.

AutoCAD 2010: Mastering 2D Concepts Tutorial Video

Written and narrated by Autodesk certified instructor Shaun Bryant, this Mastering 2D Concepts AutoCAD 2010 Tutorial Video grounds users in the core drawing and editing skills needed to use this immensely powerful software. Utilized in so many different fields for so many different purposes, the basic skills for using the program are a constant. By combining expert knowledge with an intuitive, visuals-based approach, this training will help you learn how to effectively express visual concepts without the frustration that can come when trying to teach yourself.
The key to these tutorials is flexibility and control. Users can watch passively or use hands-on work files and can progress as quickly or slowly as they like. Offered online or on CD / DVD, the tutorial video lessons can be watched right from home or anywhere you have a computer.

Intelligent User Interface Enhancements

As soon as you start AutoCAD 2010 for the first time, you’re presented with a quick dialog that asks you what kind of work you do: Architecture, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing, Structural Engineering and Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) are all available. From your choice, AutoCAD customizes menus, tools and measurement units to correspond with common workflows for your field. This is simple, but smart. You’ll find that it can really speed up the way you work, but if you prefer a more general environment, both an updated generic and classic AutoCAD user workspace are available. You can further optimize your environment by choosing to emphasize 3D Modeling, Photorealistic Rendering, Review and Markup or Sheet Sets and incorporate custom drawing template (DWT) files in the initial setup stages.
From within the AutoCAD 2010 workspace, you’ll see the ribbon interface and quick access toolbar introduced in 2009, except now it’s easier to customize them for your favorite commands. Ribbons now adjust on the fly to the proper ‘context’ of the items you are working with, so that image tools come up when you’ve highlighted and image, and so on. Those who went through the trouble of making their own dashboard panels in version 2008 and 2007 also now have the ability to import them into 2010’s workspace. Autodesk seems to realize that it made a big jump to the ribbon format in 2009, and it’s done a lot to make the ribbon more intuitive while at the same time giving users plenty of ways to opt for more traditional tool setups.
The workspace is the window through which so many designers see their work. With AutoCAD having such an influence over so many technical fields, it’s crucial that users feel comfortable with their software so that they can place the focus on delivering quality designs.
While much of the training focuses on concepts and technique, this AutoCAD 2010: Mastering 2D Concepts Tutorial Video addresses the new features both in the beginning and throughout the course so that you get a full appreciation of the way the many parts of AutoCAD work together to help you get work done.
